Having shared five goals between them on the final day of the regular season, this pair continued the trend in the first leg of this play-off by scoring three each. With these games still fresh in the memory, it would take a brave punter to bet against the two teams ending the trilogy in high-scoring fashion when they meet again on Thursday night.

As the 5th and 6th highest scorers in the division, these two are certainly no slouches in front of goal (not that anyone needed reminding of that after the first-leg!) and this really is anyone’s game. As the home side, Exeter are favourites, but they haven’t exactly been infallible at home and, as we’ve seen recently, they’re a team that can’t really be trusted to keep things tight at the back. Much of the same can be said about the visitors and thus this is certainly something of a head-scratcher as far as picking the winner goes.

One bet that does stand out as a bit of a banker is ‘Exeter to Score Over 1.5 Goals’. Even at 4/5, the price on the hosts notching a couple of times seems a tad generous. Discounting their rather poor start to the season, Exeter, since roughly the turn of the year, have been in imperious scoring form on their own patch. Paul Tisdale’s men have scored at least twice in 11 of their last 14 matches at St James Park, including against Carlisle recently. The Grecians play an attacking game and will surely come on strong against a visiting back-line that they’ve breached fairly easily (scored twice against) on three occasions this season. The fact that Exeter rank highly (7th out of 24) when it comes to average shots on target per game (at home) also bodes well ahead of this one.

Despite being the visitors, Carlisle will certainly fancy their chances, especially after winning 3-2 on this ground less than two weeks ago; however, as was the case on that occasion, they’re likely to need plenty of goals to see them through. After all, defending on the road hasn’t really been their forte this season. Not only have they conceded 34 goals on the road this season, letting in at least twice on 11 occasions, but Carlisle also conceded, on average, League Two’s sixth-highest shots on target over the course of the regular campaign. Against an Exeter side who will almost certainly look to pile forward, such a stat is anything but positive for the visitors.

Overall, this pair have both proven themselves to be more than capable of hurting the other and this certainly isn’t an easy game to call. Having said this, in front of their own fans, it would be a big surprise if Exeter didn’t find the net a couple of times and thus backing home goals is thought to be the best option for punters.
