Having started the season rather poorly, Dijon’s form just about improved last weekend as they snatched a draw from the hands of defeat away at Rennes, thanks to a 92nd minute goal from Julio Tavares. On balance, the point was deserved, and The Mustards will now be hoping to kick-on having prevented themselves from suffering three defeats on the bounce.

Montpellier also shared the spoils last weekend as they were unable to find a winner against newly promoted Strasbourg. Despite dominating proceedings on home soil, the hosts found themselves a goal down and required a 72nd minute equaliser from Daniel Congré to secure a draw.

Neither of these two teams are strangers when it comes to goals (at both ends) and so the bet that stands out here is ‘Over 2.5 Goals’. Goals rarely elude either when they meet, so it would be no surprise whatsoever if the fans in attendance at Stade Gaston Gérard witnessed a high-scoring match. After all, the score-line read 3-3 when Montpellier visited Dijon last season.

As was the case for much of last term, Dijon have well and truly been among the goals right from the off this season. Defensively, they’ve been poor, as they have already conceded a worrying total of nine goals. However, things have improved going forward since their 3-0 opening day defeat against Marseille, as they’ve scored in each of their last two matches, notching a total of three goals. ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ has landed in all three of their Ligue 1 matches to date.

From an attacking point of view, Dijon could easily do well this season; they have both pace and power going forward, while, perhaps more importantly, they have players such as Julio Tavares and new signing Wesley Saïd who know the way to goal. They scored a more than respectable 46 goals last season, more than all but one team outside of the top six, and should have few problems finding the net again this campaign. It is at the other end of the pitch where they fell down last season; if their early performances are anything to go by, conceding regular goals looks like it’s going to be a big problem once again. To their credit, Olivier Dall’Oglio’s side do look to get forward and attack, so they will indeed score plenty of goals; however, keeping them out was, is, and will continue to be an issue, especially against an attack-minded Montpellier.

Montpellier are another of Ligue 1’s forward-thinking sides. Last season, they entertained with their open approach and, like Dijon, both scored and conceded plenty of goals. The goals are yet to arrive in any great number this season, as they’ve both scored and conceded just two. Having said that, given the chances that they’ve both created and conceded during their opening three matches, it probably won’t be long before this Montpellier side find themselves involved in high-scoring encounters on a regular basis. This match against Dijon is an excellent opportunity for them to have a real go going forward, so the goals could easily start to flow very soon.

Quite frankly, as these two both look suspect at the back, and both share a willingness to get forward, there should be plenty of action at both ends of the pitch at Stade Gaston Gérard on Saturday evening. Goals are certainly fancied.
