In the week before the Australian Open, Rublev unexpectedly lost to Thanasi Kokkinakis (4-6, 6-3, 3-6). On that occasion, he also failed to take the third set.

Rublev tries to play as aggressively as possible, but it seems he does not always have the stamina to maintain this intensity throughout the match.

Rublev’s best result so far at the Australian Open was reaching the quarter-finals in 2021.

Dominic Thiem:

Thiem’s first matches of the season have not made him optimistic either. So far, he has nothing to boast about.

Dominic tried to qualify for the main draw of the first tournament in Adelaide but lost straight away in qualification to Kwon Soon-woo (4-6, 1-6).

He played two matches at an exhibition tournament last week. In the first, he lost to Alex De Minaur, while in the second, he defeated Francis Tiafoe.

Thiem was slow to recover from a compound wrist injury last year, but he came close to breaking through a number of tournaments towards the end of the year. The Austrian reached the semi-finals in Gijon and Antwerp.

Dominic Thiem has lost six straight matches to a top-10 tennis player.
