There is nothing from the stomach or the intestines. We were fortunate today, but if nothing changes, we will lose points again sooner or later.

Despite a 4-2 victory over Tottenham on Thursday night, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola unleashed an incredible rant on his players and fans.

The Premier League champions appeared to be in trouble after falling behind 2-0 at halftime, but they stormed back to claim a memorable victory.

City moved within five points of Arsenal at the top of the table thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez, Erling Haaland, and Riyad Mahrez, but Guardiola was unimpressed.

The Spaniard was pleased with the outcome, but not with much else he saw or heard at the Etihad, lashing out at his players and supporters.

‘I cannot deny how happy we are, but we are not the team we were,’ Guardiola told Sky Sports.

‘Not in terms of play; we played well in the first half, but there are many things we need to work on in terms of competitiveness, in terms of what we need to do in many many ways, and we are far away.

‘There is nothing from the stomach or the intestines. We were fortunate today, but if nothing changes, we will lose points again sooner or later.’

On what he felt was missing, Guardiola explained: ‘Passion, fire, and desire and to win from minute one. It was the same for our fans, who sat silently for 45 minutes.

‘They booed [at halftime] because we were losing, but that’s the same as our team; perhaps we were too comfortable after winning four Premier Leagues in five years. We react after they score, but that is not the point.’

The City manager believes that complacency has set in at the club, among players and fans, and he wants to get rid of it as the club fights to retain the Premier League title.

‘Definitely [a fire has gone out], otherwise we would not concede the goals we do in every single game,’ he said. Today we were lucky but on another day we might not be so lucky.

It’s my duty, my responsibility [to restore the fire]. I want to reclaim my fans. I want my fans to be here. Not my away fans, who are the best; I want the fans to be here.

‘We need to do it, but everyone is too laid back.’

Arsenal is leading the Premier League and looking impressive in doing so, with Guardiola believing that it is the passion of players who have been without a title for a long time that is making the difference.

‘We have an opponent with FIRE in Arsenal,’ he continued.

‘Two decades without a Premier League title. And every player believes they will go down in history as we did when we first won the Premier League, breaking all records and winning back-to-back.

‘I’m explaining the reality that everything is so comfortable, but opponents don’t wait. Of course, I’m not [content]. My team is unfamiliar to me. My team is always passionate, eager to run, and everything else.’
