Manchester City Ace Rico Lewis Opens Up On Kyle Walker Influence As Guardiola Entrusts The Youngstar

Lewis discusses how helpful and supportive Kyle Walker has been in his transition to the senior team, despite the fact that the youngster has taken his starting spot.

Rico Lewis has revealed in detail about Kyle Walker’s advice as the pair form a healthy competitive relationship at Manchester City. This was very inspiring because it simply demonstrated the type of player and father figure Kyle has been to the youngster.

Since the World Cup break, Lewis has started three Premier League games ahead of his senior teammate, quickly becoming one of Pep Guardiola’s favorite projects at the Etihad.

The 18-year-old withstood a firm and physical test in City’s 4-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday evening, drifting into midfield to assertively dictate the tempo of City’s play.

His recent form appears to be keeping veteran full-back and City mainstay Walker on the bench. The Sheffield-born defender, who has 73 England caps and is 14 years Lewis’ senior, could be forgiven for feeling cheated. However, as Lewis explained following Thursday’s victory, the two’s relationship is as healthy as one could hope for.

The young player spoke to the press about how he and his senior colleague have maintained a healthy competition and even revealed some advice given to him by the star English left back. He said:

“I get on well with him, We’ve had talks about stuff and been pretty open about everything that happens between us like selection and things like that. He’s really good at talking to me. He’s not putting any pressure on me to do anything special, he’s just telling me to concentrate on myself and do as much as I can.”

Lewis is already on track to double the minutes earned by Phil Foden during his breakthrough season in 2017/2018, as Pep Guardiola has faith in the youngster’s ability in high-pressure games like Thursday’s win or the December trip to Elland Road to face Leeds United.

Equally significant for the teenager was his ability to change the dynamic in City’s 1-0 win over Chelsea earlier this month, coming on for Walker and lifting those around him.

With a call-up to England’s under-21 squad looming and an ever-increasing stature among the City squad, the Radcliffe star’s stock is rising quickly, and Walker looks set to play a key role in his development.
